• Social Darwinism is a loose set of ideologies that emerged in the late 1800s. The theory held that the most intelligent, diligent, and productive people would grow wealthy and survive because of natural selection. At the same time, the uneducated and lazy would remain poor and die off.

  • Herbert Spencer promulgated the doctrine of “Social Darwinism.” social Darwinists believe in survival of the fittest. Spencer claimed that Mother Nature worked to eliminate the weak aspects to allow the strong to survive. Certain people become powerful in society because they are innately better. Social Darwinism has been used to justify imperialism, racism, eugenics, and social inequality over the past century.

  • 2nd: He then applied Darwin’s theory to sociology to develop “Social Darwinism.” He published “Principles of Biology” (1864). Herbert Spencer promulgated the doctrine of “Social Darwinism” with that book.
  • It asserted that the principles of evolution, including natural selection, apply to human societies, social classes, individuals, and biological species developing over geologic time. Darwin thought some races were more intelligent than others. Darwin also believed that blacks were inferior in their mental abilities. Darwin’s racist and imperialist attitudes were conventional for his time. He provided scientific justification for racism among his followers.
  • When Social Darwinism gained popularity, inequality gained a strong foothold in a society driven by concepts of eugenics and racism. The nation’s wealthy upper class embraced social Darwinism in the late 19th century to justify their accumulation of wealth and power.

Socialism: The main difference is that under communism, most property and economic resources are owned and controlled by the state rather than individual citizens. Under socialism, all citizens share equally economic resources as allocated by an elected government. (However, free and fair elections rarely happen).
