MESOZOIC ERA: 250 MILLION TO 65 MILLION YEARS AGO.
CENOZOIC ERA: 65 MILLION YEARS AG0 TO THE PRESENT.
The Precambrian era started with the beginning of the Earth 4.6 billion years ago. For billions of years, there was no life on the planet. No one is certain how life on Earth began. The top 3 scientific guess theories are Primordial Soup, Hydrothermal Vent, and Panspermia.
The 1st life on Earth was single-celled organisms, followed by jellyfish and other multiple-celled life forms. No life was on land. The atmosphere was beginning to accumulate enough oxygen to support life forms.
The Paleozoic era began with the Cambrian Explosion. This explosion of life forms was rapid. Life flourished on Earth. Vast amounts of life forms moved from the oceans onto the land. Plants were the first to make a move, followed by the invertebrates. Soon after, verberates followed. Many new species appeared and thrived.
The end of the Paleozoic era came with a mass extinction of 95% of marine life and 70% of life on land. This mass extinction allowed new species to arise. Climate change was the cause. The continents drifted together again to form Pangaea.
At the start of the Mesozoic era, a wide variety of new species evolved and thrived to replace the extinct ones.
The Mesozoic era is known as the age of the dinosaurs because they dominated that era.
.The climate during the Mesozoic era was very humid and tropical. Lush, green plants were everywhere. Herbivores thrived. Dinosaurs started small and grew to gigantic sizes.
Small mammals came into existence, and birds evolved from dinosaurs.
Another mass extinction marked the end of the Mesozoic era. They caused the extinctions by A giant meteor or comet impact, volcanic activity, climate change, or a combination of all three.
Then. the current era (Cenozoic) began.
With the dinosaurs now gone, small mammals that had survived could grow and become dominant. That would be us.
The climate changed drastically over a relatively short period during the Mesozoic era; it became much more relaxed and drier. A series of ice ages covered much of the Earth’s surface with glaciers.
All species of life, including humans, evolved into their present-day forms during this time. The next mass extinction lies ahead.
