General relativity says that energy (in the form of mass, light, and whatever other forms it comes in) tells spacetime how to bend, and the bending of spacetime tells that energy how to move.
The concept of gravity is then that objects are falling along with the bending of spacetime. The particles that make up light are massless, but does that mean they do not take up space? So yes, energy does take up space, but only one form of energy does mass. As in fermions, matter at a fundamental level does take up space because they have mass.
