  •   Emission spectra for atoms appear as a series of lines because electrons fall from higher energy states to lower ones and emit energy as electromagnetic radiation.
  • Wave patterns are changed by the emission and absorption of a photon.  When an electron absorbs a photon, it is destroyed. All its energy is imparted to the electron, which instantly jumps to a new energy level. The photon itself ceases to be. The opposite happens when an electron emits a photon.  The opposite happens when an electron emits a photon. The photon is not selected from a “well” of photons living in the atom; it is created instantaneously out of the vacuum. The electron in the high energy level is instantly converted into a lower energy-level electron and a photon. There is no in-between state where the photon is being constructed. It instantly pops into existence.

Electron and atom diffraction:  Experiments proved atomic particles act just like waves. … The energy of the electron is deposited at a point, just as if it was a particle.   • An important aspect of quantum mechanics is its principle of complementarity or dialecticism. Is light a particle or a wave? Complementarity realizes that particle and wave behavior are mutually exclusive, yet both are necessary for a complete description of all phenomena.  Macro and micro taken together, they are logically exclusive.  The problem with quantum mechanics is trying to fit together the wave picture and the particle picture.
Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle
  • The uncertainty principle, also called the Heisenberg uncertainty principle or indeterminacy principle, statement, articulated (1927) by the German physicist Werner Heisenberg, that the position and the velocity of an object cannot both be measured exactly, at the same time.  The Heisenberg uncertainty principle is a law in quantum mechanics that limits how accurately you can measure two related variables. Specifically, it says that the more accurately you measure the momentum (or velocity) of a particle, the less accurately you can know its position and vice versa.  Everything in the universe is uncertain.
  • Interferometer:  An instrument in which the interference of two beams of light is employed to make precise measurements.  Because of their wide application, interferometers come in a variety of shapes and sizes. They are used to measure everything from the smallest variations on the surface of a microscopic organism to the structure of enormous expanses of gas and dust in the distant Universe, and now, to detect gravitational waves.  Interferometry uses the principle of superposition to combine waves in a way that will cause the result of their combination to have some meaningful property that is diagnostic of the original state of the waves.  A laser is used because it is a convenient source of a narrow beam of lightIt has the added advantage that it produces light of a single wavelength; white light would produce a similar effect, but the diffraction pattern would not be as wide as different wavelengths (colors) would interfere at different points.

  • Constructive and destructive interference:  Gravitational waves are a specimen of Destructive Interference. Light beams demonstrate Destructive Interference. Moving electrons and radio waves also perform Destructive InterferenceConstructive and Destructive Interference. In constructive interference, waves that are in phase will combine and increase the amplitude. In destructive interference, waves are out of phase and cancel one another out. For interference of light waves, such as in Young’s two-slit experiment, bands of bright and dark lines will appear. The bright regions occur whenever an integer number of waves constructively interfere—the alternating bright and dark bands resulting from two-slit interference.  When two waves of identical wavelength are in phase, they form a new wave with an amplitude equal to the sum of their individual amplitudes (constructive interference).
