Gravitational time dilation occurs because objects with a lot of mass create a strong gravitational field. The gravitational field is really a curving of space and time. The stronger the gravity, the more spacetime curves, and the slower time itself proceeds.
Gravity is the glue that holds the universe together. Energy is a property that matter has.
All matter flows trough time. Matter is the substance of which all material is made. In physics, energy is a property of matter. It can be transferred between objects and converted in form. It cannot be created or destroyed.
Energy and matter are really the same thing. Completely interchangeable energy and mass are related through special relativity, mass and space are related through general relativity. Energy, matter, space and time are all aspects of the same thing.
