An ice age is a period of colder global temperatures and recurring glacial expansion capable of lasting hundreds of millions of years.
Earth’s climate alternates between ice ages and greenhouse periods, during which there are no glaciers on the planet. An ice age is a long period of reduction in the temperature of the Earth’s surface and atmosphere, resulting in the presence or expansion of continental and polar ice sheets and alpine glaciers. Earth is currently in the Quaternary glaciation, known in popular terminology as the Ice Age.
Volcanoes helped to freeze the Earth three times and create a hothouse environment three times.
Every symmetry of physics laws leads to a conservation law, and every conservation law arises from a symmetry in the laws of physics.

GETTING BEYOND EVIL IS A START
The lowest natural temperature ever directly recorded at ground level on Earth is −89.2 °C (−128.6 °F; 184.0 K) at the Soviet Vostok Station in Antarctica on 21 July 1983 by ground measurement. DURING THE SNOWBALL EON, IT WAS FIVE TIMES COLDER.
One billion years ago, a snowball engulfed the Earth. (or, it could have been ice and slush).
Most of the continents were staged around or near the Equator.
This snowball started around 780 million years ago, or 740 million years ago.
It ended 540 million years ago.
This was “Snowball Earth” – a deep freeze that began around 715 million years ago and held Earth in its icy grip for 120 million years.
This theory was established in a 1998 paper.
Thick rock layers were left when the glaciers retreated.
Lesser ice ages occur every 100,000 years, followed by a greenhouse era. This ice age cycle was repeated twice, followed by a hothouse cycle. This cycle repeats without exception.

The greenhouse effect is when the Earth’s atmosphere becomes thick with gases and substances which trap the sun’s radiation, making the Earth warmer.
After the last glaciation ended, global temperatures appear to have peaked around 6000 years ago, called the Holocene Climatic Optimum.
The Pleistocene Epoch is typically defined as the period that began about 2.6 million years ago and lasted until about 11,700 years ago. The most recent Ice Age occurred then, as glaciers covered vast parts of the planet Earth
Contributing factors include:
Climate instability happens before the ice age.
The sun’s luminosity was only 80% of what it is today.
Volcano activity lessens during an ice age while increasing coming out of an ice age.
Earth’s thermostat was altered. Carbon dioxide was a runaway icehouse effect.
Carbon isotopes are smoking guns.
The Rodina eon spewed vast quantities of basalt, soaking up carbon dioxide. This altered the carbon cycle.
Sulfur gases cooled the atmosphere.
These frigid temperatures shut down ecosystems.
Plate tectonics came to the rescue.
The five primary ice ages:
Scientists have recorded five significant ice ages throughout the Earth’s history: the Huronian (2.4-2.1 billion years ago), Cryogenian (850-635 million years ago), Andean-Saharan (460-430 mya), Karoo (360-260 mya), and Quaternary (2.6 mya-present).
We are in a warm interglacial that began about 11,000 years ago.
The Ice Ages began 2.4 million years ago. The last one ended 11,500 years ago. During this time, the Earth’s climate repeatedly changed between freezing periods, during which glaciers covered large parts of the world see map below) and hot periods during which many of the glaciers melted.
There were at least 17 cycles between glacial and interglacial periods. The glacial periods lasted longer than the interglacial periods. The last glacial period began about 100,000 years ago and lasted until 11,500 years ago. Today we are in a warm interglacial period.
Northern Hemisphere glaciation during the last ice ages. The accumulation of 3 to 4 km thick ice sheets caused a sea level lowering of about 120 m. Winter sea ice coverage was much more limited in the south. Also, the Alps and the Himalayas were covered by glaciers.
An actual Hothouse Earth emerged when carbon dioxide levels reached something like 800ppm – about double those of today. There was little or no ice on Earth, and the polar regions had forests and relics adapted to living half the year in darkness. This was the world of the dinosaurs 100m years ago.
Carbon dioxide started the global warming effect.
Flora and fauna growth was restored
While sponges did their jobs all along.
Flora and fauna exploded again.
When more sunlight reaches the northern latitudes, temperatures rise, ice sheets melt, and the ice age ends. … These samples tell us that during the current ice age, the climate on Earth has flip-flopped between glacial and interglacial periods at least 17 times!
A “greenhouse Earth” is a period in which there are no continental glaciers on the planet, and the levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases (such as water vapor and methane) are high. Sea surface temperatures (SSTs) range from 28 °C (82.4 °F) in the tropics to 0 °C (32 °F) in the polar regions.
