Genes that code for proteins make up only about 2% of the human genome. Many researchers once dismissed the other 98% of the genome as “junk DNA.” Still, geneticists now know these noncoding regions help regulate the activity of the 20,000 or so protein-coding genes identified. Only about two percent of DNA is made up of protein-coding genes; the other ninety-eight percent is noncoding. Scientists once thought noncoding DNA was “junk” with no known purpose. However, it is becoming clear that at least some of it is integral to the function of cells, particularly the control of gene activity.
