VOLCANOS, SUBDUCTION CONVEYORS, & METAMORPHIC ROCKS

Real volcanoes in nature commonly fit within three basic types. Shield volcanoes, considered the least dangerous type, have low, rounded appearances caused by hot, fluid lava formation. Shield volcanoes produce mostly lava and only a little ash and coarse material. Composite cone volcanoes present a genuine danger.
Shield volcanoes: Where a volcano produces low viscosity, runny lava, it spreads far from the source, forming a volcano with gentle slopes. There are three main types of volcanoes – composite or Strato, shield, and dome. This type is called a shield volcano. Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa are shield volcanoes. Composite volcanoes, sometimes known as stratovolcanoes, are steep-sided cones formed from layers of ash and [lava] flows. The eruptions from these volcanoes may be a pyroclastic flow rather than a flow of lava.
