The Fentanyl Crisis Requires Ongoing and Strategic Federal Action. Synthetic opioids, such as fentanyl, are now the most common drugs involved in drug overdose deaths in the United States—two-thirds (68%) of the reported 107,081 drug overdose deaths in 2022 involved illicitly manufactured fentanyl.
Fentanyl-related overdose deaths started rising in 2012. By 2016, they eclipsed deaths from heroin and diverted prescription pain pills. By 2017, fentanyl was found in 50 percent of opioid-related overdose deaths, and by 2022, as we know, it was involved in roughly 90 percent. Currently, China remains the primary source of fentanyl and fentanyl-related substances trafficked through international mail.
