12,500 years ago, the Younger Dryas era began. It lasted 1,200 years of hell on earth.

This event, which explains why humans have 46 chromosomes while other great apes have 48, occurred in the lineage leading to humans and is estimated to have happened at least 400,000 to 1.5 million years ago.
